Core Features & Technology

  • Volvo D13 Tier 4 Final Engine: This 13-liter engine delivers 373 hp and is tuned for high torque at low RPMs. It features a simplified aftertreatment system that uses passive regeneration, meaning the machine doesn’t have to stop working to “clean” the diesel particulate filter.

  • Integrated ECO Mode: A hallmark of the E-series, this unique system optimizes the hydraulic flow and pressure to reduce energy loss. Unlike “economy” modes on other machines that simply drop RPMs, Volvo’s system maintains high digging power while improving fuel efficiency by up to 10%.

  • New Electro-Hydraulic System: By 2016, Volvo replaced many mechanical pilot lines with electric sensors. This allows the Main Control Valve (MCV) to use intelligent technology to control “on-demand” flow, reducing internal friction and providing much smoother, more precise multi-function movement.

  • Work Mode Selection: Operators can choose between four distinct modes: I (Idle), F (Fine), G (General), and H (Heavy). The machine automatically adjusts engine speed and hydraulic pump torque to match the specific task, preventing power waste.

  • Boom & Arm Regeneration: This feature captures “free” energy during boom down and arm-in movements. Instead of sending oil back to the tank, it redirects it to the other side of the cylinder to speed up cycle times and save fuel.

Operator Comfort & Maintenance

  • Volvo Care Cab: Features a redesigned 8-inch color LCD monitor with high resolution. The cab is pressurized to keep dust out and mounted on viscous silicon rubber mounts to drastically reduce the vibration felt during heavy hammering or rock ripping.

  • Customizable “Hot Keys”: The operator can assign frequent functions (like the camera view, windshield wipers, or power boost) to a shortcut button on the joystick. This allows them to stay focused on the trench without reaching for the console.

  • Single-Module Cooling System: The radiator, charged air cooler, and hydraulic oil cooler are situated side-by-side on a single layer rather than being stacked. This design maximizes cooling efficiency and makes it significantly easier to blow out debris with an air hose.

  • Safe Servicing Access: The machine features large, wide-opening doors and punched anti-slip plates. For the 2016 model, Volvo centralized the filters and greasing points, allowing the majority of daily checks to be performed from ground level or a stable platform.

  • Volvo Co-Pilot (Optional): Many 2016 units began featuring the Co-Pilot touchscreen, which hosts Dig Assist. This allows the operator to set depth and slope parameters from the cab, eliminating the need for a grade-checker to stand in the trench.
